What exactly is considered to be legit music theatre material?
im supposed to have one for a college audition and i want to make sure i know exactly what they are looking for. their exact words were to prepare a song from a legitimate musical theatre production (no standards or pop repertoire, please) are there any legit shows for someone with a more contemporary sounding voice?

When they say a legit music theatre song, they mean a song actually from a show. Meaning not a standard like Frank Sinatra but a song from an actually musical theatre show. Any actually musical is legit. They just don't want people to come in and sing Kelly Clarkson

Whatever you decide on, I highly suggest choosing something from a classic musical (pre-1980s).

I would axe Once You Lose Your Heart. Not to be a jerk but its not very hard. The other two are good choices though!

Oh I totally know what you mean, and it didn't come of jerkish or anything. its a super easy song, it's my 'that was nice' song. lol.
im probably going to keep working on the other two and then see what my voice teacher thinks. thanks for the input you guys.

Sometimes an amazing acting/singing performance of a simple song is better than trying to sing something really difficult that you can't focus on being connected to the material because you are trying to sing the song.

ANYTHING from Les Mis is automatically overdone. Most of the ones from Cabaret are as well. Memory from Cats - blehhhh. Don't Cry For Me Argentina. My New Philosophy. Shy from OUAM. Chicago ones have been popular since the movie came out. Don't Rain on My Parade & Everything's Coming Up Roses. A Chorus Line is fairly popular too. Adelaide's Lament. As Long as he Needs Me.
Those are the ones I've heard over and over again at junior high & high school auditions, at least. There's not any on there but WICKED. If I hear another teenage girl who thinks she's Kristin Chenoweth sing 'Popular'.... I may explode.

When I go into a bar or cabaret - I always want to throw up when they start singing 'Maybe this Time' or 'Cabaret', It's like 'Okay, do we have any other songs tonight? Play Nessun Dorma or something!' (Since I know most are not going to stand around singing Puccini with their cocktails, LOL!)
However, I said that once when a friend of mine was playing in the lounge and he said 'Oh, You're here, Okay!' and started playing it, very well I might add, then came back at me with: 'Come over to the mike and sing it for us!' and I looked over and said: 'I can't, You are playing it in Sarah Brightman's key' He called me on that one - I didn't know he knew it by heart! Of course, Had I had a few cocktails first, I would have taken the mike, LOL!

I don't know about all of the songs you listed, but below are some over-done/stay away from for various reason songs.
Don't Call Me Trailer Trash - 'Cowgirls'--not overdone, but not a ballad--should be done very uptempo. Who Will Love Me As I Am? - 'Side Show'--I would stay away from this one. I don't know if it's overdone at college auditions, but a lot of musical theatre programs seem to have been using it for class projects lately. Class - 'Chicago'--Traditionally a duet. You Don't Know This Man- 'Parade'--This is a great song, but might be tough for a high school senior to relate to. Stars And The Moon - 'Songs For A New World'--VERY over done, plus accompaniests hate Jason Robert Brown. My Child Will Forgive Me - From 'Parade'--even harder for a teenager to relate to than You Don't Know This Man (not really age appropriate). A Change In Me- 'Beauty & The Beast'--I would say overdone. My New Philosophy - 'You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown'--overdone. As If We Never Said Goodbye - From 'Sunset Boulevard'--not at all age appropriate. Don't Rain On My Parade - 'Funny Girl'--Never do a song that is associated with a specific person, plus not a ballad. Everything's Coming Up Roses - 'Gypsy'--Again, everyone thinks 'Ethel Merman' when they hear this title. Honey Bun - 'South Pacific'--Not a ballad. Just A Housewife - 'Working'--not really age appropriate. The Ladies Who Lunch - 'Company'--Definitely not age appropriate (plus it's Elaine Stritch's role). Maybe This Time - From 'Cabaret'--not appropriate. A New Life - 'Jekyll & Hyde'--I think of this as overdone. Nothing - 'A Chorus Line'--definitely overdone Rose's Turn - 'Gypsy'--NO. So What? - 'Cabaret'--Not age appropriate. With One Look - 'Sunset Boulevard'--not age appropriate Someone Like You - 'Jekyll & Hyde'--definitely overdone. Adelaide's Lament - 'Guys & Dolls'--very overdone. Another Hundred People - 'Company'--not a ballad As Long As He Needs Me - 'Oliver!'--overdone. I Dreamed A Dream - 'Les Miserables'--overdone If He Walked Into My Life - 'Mame'--not age appropriate On My Own - 'Les Miserables'--VERY overdone. What I Did For Love - 'A Chorus Line'--overdone Shy - 'Once Upon A Mattress'--overdone Always True To You In My Fashion - 'Kiss Me, Kate'--this should be an uptemo. By The Sea - From 'Sweeney Todd'--Don't do anything that is currently on Broadway. Don't Cry For Me Argentina - 'Evita'--overdone I Cain't Say No - 'Oklahoma!'--overdone Memory - 'Cats'--NO. Worst Pies In London - 'Sweeney Todd'--again, it's on Broadway Cabaret - 'Cabaret'--Liza's song. Take Back Your Mink - 'Guys And Dolls'--Just stay away from Guys and Dolls in general.

Just from listening to L5Y, it seems like his accompaniment parts are very intricate. This puts accompanists on the spot, which is not something that you really want to do at an audtion; you want to make it as easy for them as you can so that they can help you look good.

You're right, Shay, plus sometimes it's like Sondheim where the underscoring doesn't realy go with the vocals at all, so it's hard to keep on track if it's never been rehearsed together. Also, all of his work is pretty overdone, and some (Last Five Years) really isn't age-appropriate (I mean, at 18 can you really be singing about auditioning against girls who are 'Younger and thinner' than you?).
